Course overview

What is the aim of the Chemicals and Waste Management Course?

To enhance the understanding of primary operational and environmental aspects of, and options for, chemicals and waste management in oil & gas exploration and production.

What are the learning objectives of the Course?

Participants are expected to:

  • Develop basic knowledge of key environmental concerns associated with chemicals and waste management at each stage of oil & gas exploration and production;
  • Familiarize themselves with fundamental health and safety requirements along with the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when dealing with chemicals and waste;
  • Identify main components of on-land management options for chemicals and waste;
  • Understand basic techniques and tools for environmental monitoring for chemicals and waste;
  • Appreciate basic features of emergency preparedness and response in managing chemicals and waste;
  • Learn about international guidelines and best practices relevant for chemicals and waste; and,
  • Identify and prioritize institutional capacities and needs for strengthening chemicals and waste management at the national level.

Who is the target audience?

This course targets national and local government officials in the ministries of petroleum, environment, health, transport, and other related sectors. Learners will suffice with a basic knowledge of the oil & gas sector.
