What is the aim of the course?

To enhance the understanding of capacity towards identifying, preventing, and mitigating potential environmental and public health impacts of associated gas processing and treatment. This course also covers economic opportunities for recovering and utilizing associated gas.

What are the learning objectives of the course?

Participants are expected to:

  • Develop basic knowledge of associated gas – its processing and treatment and why it is relevant for sound environmental management in the oil & gas sector;
  • Identify the possible waste streams that may be generated at every stage of the processing and treatment process;
  • Describe the environmental issues/concerns at each stage of the processing and treatment process, including possible impacts on public health and safety;
  • Develop introductory knowledge on best available technologies to prevent and/or mitigate environmental and public health impacts of associated gas processing and treatment, drawing from selected case studies;
  • Understand the basic principles of contingency planning for accidental gas leaks and other related pollution incidents;
  • Gain an appreciation of global best practice in regulating associated gas processing and treatment and identify complementarities and differences with national standards and practice.

Who is the target audience?

This course targets government officials responsible for regulation, monitoring, or implementation of environmental legislation in the oil & gas sector, as well as members of industry, civil society, and academia with roles related to environmental regulation, advisory, or management in the oil & gas sector.
