UN Environment/OCHA Joint Unit Mission Report – 2010 Ukraine Dam Stability

This mission report describes the findings of a technical scoping mission by the United Nations Disaster Assessment Coordination (UNDAC) and the European Commission Monitoring and Information Centre (EC-MIC) ahead of the potential collapse of a tailings dam in Ukraine.

In light of a potential collapse of a tailings dam in the Kalush region of Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast, western Ukraine, the Government of Ukraine, through the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and UN Environment, requested international assistance. A technical scoping mission was conducted jointly through the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) system and the European Commission Monitoring and Information Centre (EC-MIC). The expert team was led by a UN Environment/OCHA Joint Unit staff member, with key support from the International Humanitarian Partnership and the Environmental Assessment Module (EAM) from the Netherlands which deployed for the first time internationally. Technical as well as policy level recommendations were made.
