UN Environment/OCHA Joint Unit Mission Report – 2013 Comoros Floods

This mission report details the findings of experts deployed by the UN Environment/OCHA Joint Unit (JEU) following floods & landslides caused by torrential rains in the Comoros.

In April 2012, torrential rains led to devastating floods and landslides in the Comoros. The impact was acute: destroyed homes, loss of agriculture lands, damaged infrastructure and loss of livelihoods and assets. The UN Resident Coordinator and the Government of the Comoros subsequently requested the assistance of the JEU in assessing the environmental impacts of the disaster on critical sectors, and to inform prevention and preparedness measures. With support of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism and the World Maritime University, the mission reviewed environmental emergency risks and developed various emergency scenarios with recommendations on preventing, preparing for and responding to disasters like the one experienced.
