Chernobyl accident, a continuing catastrophe: Post disaster assessment

This publication details a post-disaster assessment involving the UN Environment/OCHA Joint Unit, which evaluated the long-term impacts of the Chernobyl nuclear accident.

Many years after the disaster, the Chernobyl nuclear accident continued to have a devastating impact on the population of the three affected countries: Belarus, Ukraine and the Russian Federation. The governments of these countries spent a large proportion of their national budgets on alleviating human suffering caused by the accident. Following a post-disaster assessment in which the JEU was involved, OCHA published in 2000 a booklet called Chernobyl, a continuing catastrophe aiming to turn the spotlight back on Chernobyl and remind people how much the victims of this tragic accident still needed help.
